Kathryn was a junior at the Oak Park - River Forest high school during the 2008 - 2009 school year. She applied for an award from the Laura Southwick foundation because she is primarily interested in cake decorating and wants to further her culinary skills. She wants to expand her  knowledge in pastries, decorating, and the art of sugar by attending more specialized classes.

The award from the Laura Southwick Foundation has assisted her with fees involved in her participation in Culinary Camp.
Kathryn's interest in cake decoration was passed down to her from both her mother and grandmother. She has taken three classes thus far, two
at the Wilton School in Darien, Illinois and one at Cakewalk, a store in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago. She started a business, Cakes by Katie, which offers custom made cakes. This experience has taught her different styles of marketing, creating, and business basics. Kathryn says that "Cake decorating has both challenged and rewarded me in its many forms and possibilities."
Caroline Wood, one of her friends, says of Kathryn: "Katie is one of the most creative and artistic people I know. I remember when Katie first became interested in cakes: she had found a good recipe for fondant and was making a Mardi Gras cake for a church party.

I was impressed by her innate expertise. Since then, Katie's cake business has blossomed. She has made wedding cakes, kid's birthday cakes, and Disney-themed cakes for dance shows and musicals.Katie has the creative and technical potential to make a cake into just about anything."
